Ayurvedic Rice Porridge w/ Raisins & Walnuts
Porridge is incredibly gut soothing, especially during one’s cycle. In Ayurvedic medicine porridges are used as a gentle cleansing aid to help balance the liver.
They also make a fantastic, soothing supporting during the literal and menstrual phase of one’s cycle when Vata and Pita dishes may become aggravated leading to anxiety, moodiness, depression, bloating and fatigue.
This is a great meal to have during or before your cycle, especially if you’re like me and struggle with PMDD & PMS.
Ayurvedic Rice Porridge
Makes 3-4 servings
Ingredients:
1 cup basmati rice
5-6 cups water (or more if you like a more liquidy porridge
1/3 cup full fat coconut milk
Salt, to taste
1 stick or 1 tsp Cinnamon
1 oz raisins
2 tbsp hemp hearts
2 tbsp walnuts
Preparations:
Wash the rice thoroughly and add it to a pot with the water, coconut milk and cinnamon stick.
Bring this to a boil. Reduce the heat. Gently simmer for 25-35 minutes.
Once the rice starts to become tender, add in the raisins, hemp hearts and walnuts. Cook for another 5 - 8 minutes.
When the rice has soaked up the water and is tender, turn off the heat.
Store in the fridge for up to 4 days and reheat on the stove with a some water.
